Jesus was prone to tell his people to love those whom it felt unnatural to love. He tasked them with loving their enemies, doing good to those who hated them, blessing those who cursed them, and praying for people who mistreated them. He said it was because that’s the only way we can be like him and have a real impact on those around us. Love always costs something. Sacrificial service is the price of Godly influence. Love isn’t a cold strategy or manipulative ideology. These neighbors are people not objects to be won. Heart change requires contact for them and for us. We need both sacrificial service and real personal contact constantly.
