On Things Above

On_Things_Above_D-Size-1

The normal assumption in secular culture is that the more heavenly minded a person is, the less earthly good they are. People assume that spiritual people are detached, impractical, and increasingly out of step with real life and the needs of the real world. They have always thought that, but have always been wrong. Jesus brought the purposes of heaven to earth, and in Colossians we learn why and how being of real earthly good requires us to be more heavenly minded, not less.

Join us on Sunday mornings starting June 29 going through Colossians, focusing On Things Above.

In addition to understanding Colossians, as our pastors, Nic and Lloyd, preach, they will model how to read an epistle (the letters in the New Testament) on your own.

Mentoring: An Investment Like None Other

2 Timothy 2:1-3  You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.  2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.  3 Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

Titus 2:3-5   3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.  4 Then they can train the younger women to…” (NIV)

There’s a difference between seeking a shortcut and choosing to do the most effective thing. Being effective is being maximally efficient while avoiding the detrimental consequences of taking shortcuts that hurt you in the long run. Christianity has very few shortcuts, because Christianity is loving. However, there are more and less effective ways to grow and seek the benefits of following Christ. A High Point How-To // Invite Someone to Easter

So you want to invite someone to Easter at High Point? Great! Here are some simple guidelines to help make your friend or family member’s experience uplifting and free from any intimidation they may feel towards going to church.

STEP 1: Ask them about their Easter plans and invite them to church

You’d be surprised how many people don’t have family in the area or friends to spend the holiday with. Even if they already have plans, asking about them shows that you care. Pick up some invite cards in the High Point lobby or get more Easter information on High Point’s website.

What Is Stopping You?

At High Point, if you’ve been listening, you’ve been hearing that we need to be engaged in living a life that “goes to dark places,” that gets out and uses the opportunities that God is giving us to make a difference with the Gospel.

But, just as important as hearing the positive message is facing the negative one: Why don’t I?

Job: Supplemental

To go along with the limited time I’m spending on Job right now – just one sermon. Let me add a few things that can help you look a little deeper. First, John Piper did a book that is essentially a poll on telling the life story of Job. Desiring God ministries turned it into an animated art film that is on iTunes and you can rent or buy here. Piper’s biblical poetry is amazingly good. His hour and 20 minute sermon is here. Oh – that’s just part one. The second part is here. Connected to missions and suffering is this talk “Purpose driven death.” Piper has thought a lot about how suffering relates to the sovereignty of God – and how all suffering has a relation to God’s good purposes. He’s neither flippant with human suffering nor the doctrine of God’s rule over all things.

Keller’s first sermon in their series on Job can be found here. You can listen to it directly here.

Why should I care about the church?

For those of you who would like to hear my talks on the church that I did at Bryan College last week, here they are.

Talk 1: My story and the main challenge
Talk 2: What is the identity of the church?
Talk 3: What is the mission of the church?
Talk 4: Why do you need the church more than you think?
Talk 5: How should you engage with the church as a young adult?

If you’re wondering why you would want to be part of the church, or if someone has asked you that question – this might be a helpful resource.
